HELLO EVERYONE
THIS SAME OLD QUESTION AS TO REQUIRE A ELECTRICAL PERMIT OR NOT.(ONTARIO)
I have been told by some inspectors that when replacing a hot water tank (electric of course) and you are swaping out unit for exact same unit then permits are not required.then if you are to replace a stove ,directly wired to the unit as as aposed to having a plug on it,then you install a recpt to accept thre new unit you must pull a permit. This being said, would this not be under the hair splitting catagory?
I have run across the appliance delivery truck installation, they had run 14/3 bx from a octagon box feed with 10/3 and left it dangling on the wall in the basement.
this is the problem with having a $ 60.00 permit (minimum),to save the $60.00 they risk the whole house.
You could save the customer the $60.00 bill and charge them $24.00 if you were a A.C.P. contractor,it will only cost you about $400.00 for the courses and a couple of days of your time.but this still will not save the guy who isto cheap even to pay the $24.00! TRUCK DRIVERS ARE CHEAPER!

HI BIGROCK
In Ontario they started a program called Acredited Contractor Program.witch allows you to get pre aproval from the inspection department.
So when you have a permit on a service upgrade all you have to do is call the hydro guys when you are finished (no waiting for the inspector)
they maintain integrity by inspecting one out of twelve of your jobs,(their choice of what one they are going to inspect)

A permit is required for any alteration to the original wiring including repair and replacement of electrical devices.

O.K.
I hear ya,but this would also require a permit to change a light bulb,100 watt incandesent,(in ontario anyway)
I think you would get an inspector to admit that not very many permits were issued for light bulbs.
so if we were to enforce inspection would you not be better off to issue E.S.A. fines to eveyone with a hydro electric bill?

Permiting requirements are different in each province, but in Sask. permits are required for the reconnection of water heaters. This is to ensure that the electrical installation does meet code. Even when it is being replaced with the same one, style, type, or whatever you can think of. What is not required to be permited is light bulbs, fuses under 750 volts, and the replacement of previously installed receptacles, switches and lighting fixtures in a single detached family dwelling by a licensed electrical contractor. See Electrical Inspection Act by using the open document button
http://www.qp.gov.sk.ca/index.cfm?fu....details&p=499
Permit cost for a contractor to reconnect that water heater is based on the retail labour and material.
$1.00-$150.00 = $5.00 fee, $151.00-$300.00 = $10.00 fee, etc.
Sask. is a place to live.

I'm a strong believer in Permits and Inspections as some guarantee to the customer. However paying the fees as in Ontario and rarely getting an actual inspection serves no purpose.
There are provinces in this Canada of ours that require that licenced persons only do electrical work. And they require permits and do inspect each installation.
